The Inn
Three Centuries on Fore Street
The White Hart began life in the 1700s as a coaching inn, built to catch the trade brought by Devon's new turnpike roads. By the mid-1700s, routes from Exeter, Tiverton and Honiton all converged on Cullompton, and when the Cullompton Turnpike Trust was formed in 1813 to carry the Exeter to Bristol Post Road through the town, the inn's future as a stopping point was secured.
In its years as a posting house, The White Hart kept its own ostler, stabled the horses of travellers passing through, and grazed spare coach horses in a paddock behind the inn. Early in the 1800s the building was remodelled: the roof was raised and the front rebuilt with the elegant, symmetrical face it still shows to Fore Street today, its canopy carried on Tuscan columns and its doorway topped with a fanlight.
That same rebuilding gave the inn a first floor assembly room, a handsome space with an ornate plaster cornice, built to host the dances and gatherings a growing market town demanded. The White Hart has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1966, and the old assembly room still stands ready for a gathering today.
